From a historical perspective, wars are never easy to explain, but from a personal point of view, it is a simple question: will I survive or not? Beyond major political events, the book depicts the personal experiences of Ukrainians and how they are living through the current war. Written by journalist and historian Mariam Naiem and illustrated by Yulia Vus and Ivan Kypibida, this graphic novel recounts Ukraine's centuries-long struggle against Russian dominance – a non-fiction book written and illustrated exclusively by Ukrainians. The authors state: "As you can imagine, we are quite tired of being written about and are eager to raise our own voices."
